How to Read
the Bible.
A short, practical guide to opening the Word for yourself — and actually understanding it.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

Good news

It’s simpler
than you think.

You don’t need a seminary degree to read the Bible. You need an open book, an open heart, and a little consistency. The same Spirit who inspired these words lives in you to help you understand them.

The Bible isn’t a rulebook to decode or a self-help manual to skim. It’s God telling the truth about who He is, who you are, and how the story ends. Come to it expecting to meet Him.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalm 119:105 · ESV

The framework

Three questions
for any passage.

Whenever you open a passage, walk it through these three questions in order. Don’t rush to step three — good application is built on careful reading.

ObserveStep 01What does it actually say? Notice who, what, where, and when. Look for repeated words, commands, and promises before you interpret anything.
InterpretStep 02What did it mean to the people who first heard it? Read it in context. A verse never means what it never meant to its original audience.
ApplyStep 03What does it mean for me now? Once you know what it says and what it meant, ask how it should change the way you think, love, and live today.

Habits that help

How to actually
keep going.

Most people don’t quit the Bible because it’s too hard. They quit because they never built a rhythm. These habits make it stick.

Start with a Gospel.

Begin in Mark or John. Meet Jesus first — everything else in Scripture points to Him.

Read a little daily.

Ten minutes a day beats two hours once a month. Small and steady wins.

Same time, same place.

Attach reading to something you already do — morning coffee, lunch break, before bed.

Pray first.

Ask God to speak before you read a word. Reading the Bible is a conversation, not a task.

Write it down.

Jot one thing that stood out and one way to live it. Writing turns reading into remembering.

Don’t quit when you miss a day.

You will miss days. Don’t let a missed day become a missed month. Just pick it back up.

Take a minute
Open your phone or a Bible to the Gospel of John, chapter 1. Read the first eighteen verses slowly, and ask God one question: what do You want me to see here?

Start today

Pick a book.
Start today.

You don’t have to read it all at once, and you don’t have to read it alone. Pick a Gospel, open it tomorrow morning, and keep showing up. The Word will do the rest.
